The Nitty Gritty

Our first year will be 12-14 students in a one room schoolhouse setting. We will have two instructors, a bus, and two beautiful classrooms. Drop off is at 8:00-8:15, Pick up is 4:00-4:15. We follow the public school schedule for most holidays; there are a few differences which will be noted in our School Calendar (available here by July 15th). A large portion of your child’s time will be spent on field trips and outside, so proper gear is mandatory.

There was a time when learning felt like living - Before the walls went up, before rows of desks replaced rivers, and bell schedules inevitably muffled curiosity.

Education is about discovery. It happens on the mountain trail, in the streams, at the fire’s edge. It is shaped by seasons, tested by terrain, and made alive by experience. Arête Mountain Academy is born from this memory. It is a call to reawaken wonder that stirs the soul and a question: what becomes possible when learning feels like living innately?

Here, education isn’t a passive act, it’s an awakening. Our students learn with mud on their boots and sun on their faces, guided by the rhythms of the natural world and the rigor of inspired academics. From the rush of a climb to the quiet focus of a sketchbook open in the lap of a student nestled beneath a tree, immersed in the world before them, drawn into the shapes and shadows of the moment. Our learners move with purpose and think with depth. They are not defined solely by their test scores, but by their capacity to ask, to create, to persist.

At Areté Mountain Academy, science is observed flowing through the watershed, dancing in the stars overhead, and pulsing in every pedal stroke. It’s felt in the balance of a bike navigating uneven terrain, measured in the tension of a climbing rope, and explored through hands-on study of ecosystems—testing water quality in streams, tracking weather changes, identifying native plants, and uncovering geology in the rocks beneath their feet. Our students don’t just learn science—they live it, with hands in the soil and eyes on the horizon. Patterns in nature reveal principles of physics and biology. Weather becomes a daily lesson and curiosity drives every discovery.

Art unfolds in open spaces—in the smear of charcoal beneath a pine, the echo of color drawn from a ridge line, in lines traced on rock faces and under shifting skies. It emerges in the wild, in the unspoken language of the land, in the way a child captures movement with a single stroke. It is carved into wood, splashed across canyon walls, and woven into daily life—alive in the rhythm of footsteps, the textures of nature, and the stories students bring into being.

Every subject - math, literature, history—is a living thread in the tapestry of their real-world experience.

We are not here to recreate school. We are here to return to the very heart of learning.

This is our call to families seeking more—for those who believe education should stretch limbs as much as minds, that the greatest lessons are learned outside the lines, and that children become leaders when they’re trusted to explore.

This is Arête Mountain Academy.

Come climb with us—toward arête, the ancient pursuit of human excellence. Toward a life where each child grows into their fullest potential, guided by strength, purpose, and wisdom.
